Chapter Four
I
It seemed that after that very little happened.
The master of the house now ignored her, certainly he showed no more lively interest, and his eyes for ever avoided hers. She came to the conclusion that she had been tensed up and had imagined the whole thing. After all, why should he appear so lowering and why should he warn her that he never gave a second chance to anyone who had cheated him?
There came letters from London.
Mrs. Biggins had been worried and wanted to know how the job was going, and if Cornishmen were as wild and as dangerous as she had always thought they must be. She had not re-let the bed-sitter, for she was convinced that sooner or later Crystal would be coming back to her, and she was never wrong when she had a hunch of that nature! Then she announced that the gent in the big car had called again. He seemed dreadful upset when he learnt that Crystal had gone down to Cornwall, and had said he would send a letter for Mrs. Biggins to forward. For Mrs. Biggins had refused to pass on the address. She knew what gentlemen were, she said, and never took no risks! Enclosed was the letter.
Somehow Crystal had never expected to see Mr. Hellstonâs writing again and was considerably surprised at the sight of it. He wrote pompously. He had come to the conclusion that they had both acted on impulse and had done very wrongly. She had been wrong in refusing his proposal of marriage, which after all was the highest compliment that a man could pay to a girl, and perhaps he had been a little hasty in dismissing her.
He was willing to reconsider what had happened, and again he asked her to be his wife.
The thought was almost ludicrous. As she laid the letter down, she compared Mr. Hellston with Luke. A great deal had happened to her, almost too much. When she had refused Mr. Hellston, she had not even met Luke and had not become so poignantly aware of the fact that there is such a thing as love at first sight. Now she realized how hopeless it would have been to contemplate a marriage of this nature.
She tore the letter up.
There was another letter from Tony, full of news. He had had so many irons in the fire about getting other jobs, and had come to the unwise decision that his only hope of a future fortune lay in the pools. Suddenly life had turned out lucky. The job that he had never expected had materialized, and to his great surprise he was going into it at the end of the week. Promotion was in the bag! In the brief space of but a few minutes, his salary had been doubled, and he was, as he put it, sitting pretty.
As everything was now so entirely different, he intended coming down to fetch her home on the first available opportunity, that was if she did not do what he felt sure she would do, pack her bags and come rollicking back to London.
